What Customers Say About SONY KDF60XBR950 60-Inch LCD Projection TV:

This was through Tweeter, which isn't in business in my area anymore, but is still around elsewhere. This problem has progressed a bit to the point where I am seeing:1. This tends to fade after a bit. I believe it is the green LCD but haven't put a green-only image on the screen to check this out.2.

Since I have been searching on this issue for about a week now I thought it would be useful to record my experience for those of you who might be looking to pick up one of these sets used. For almost 5 years (this December) our 60XBR950 has performed admirably with good brightness, color, and decent contract/blacks given it is a rear projection LCD. I am digging out the receipt this weekend and hopefully they will be able to take care of me. Note that I never saw this before so it may be related to issue #1.The good news in all of this (hopefully) is that I purchased a 5-year extended warranty on the set when I got it back in 2003. Up to a couple of weeks ago I would have given it high recommendations, and in fact picked up a smaller version of the same set for my in laws just over a year ago. However, as I have found out personally and via some internet searching this set and its cousins have some quality issues with regard to the optical block.

When my Vista Media Center menus are on the screen for an extended period of time I get some blue streaking through subsequent video. It is not clear whether Sony's extended coverage of the set applies to me, and I have also seen reports that they tend to replace your old optical block with a refurbished one that may or may not have other problems. I noticed a few weeks ago while watching a football game that the center of the screen was slightly grayer than the rest. A definite fade in colors in the center of the screen.

This was a very bad $4,200 investment and I would encourage everyone to do a search for SXRD and Optical Block on the internet to see what I mean. Now I'm afraid if I have them install an optical block (the warranty was extended due to a class action lawsuit) I'll just have the same problem a year or two from now. Sony discontinued manufacture of these tvs in 2007. I purchased this tv in November 2005 and became aware of the known issue of the optical block failing after my purchase was completed. I crossed my fingers and waited for the green blob to show up but instead I was one of the lucky ones with black backgrounds showing up as dark blue.

I AM NOT RICH AND I HATE SONY FOR THIS.I HATE THEM.TOM S WE BOUGHT THIS VERY EXPENSIVE T.V AUG OF 2006,ALL MOST TO THE WEEK I TURNED THE T.V ON AND THE COLOR WAS VERY BAD.THEN AFTER TWO WEEKS TO GET REPAIR OUT ONLY TO FIND THAT IT WAS THE OPTICAL BLOCK,(MAIN GUTS OF THE T.V)AFTER SIX MORE WEEKS THEY CAME OUT AND PUT IN A SECOND GENERATIONBLOCK THAT WOULD HAVE COST 2500 EXCEPT IT WAS COVERED DUE TO MY 500.00REPAIR WARANTY WE PURCHASED.AFTER THE WORK WAS DONE IT WAS THE BEST EVERSEEN ONCE AGAIN.NOW AGAIN TODAY MY OVER 5000.00 T.V. WILL NOT WORK.SONY COULD CARE LESS,THEY KNEW THEY HAD A PROBLEM WITH THIS SET AND PUSHED IT OUT ANYWAY.

Boy I was wrong. We bought this TV over 2.5 years ago and it is still as great as it was on its first day. As much time as I spent in front of this TV since I bought it, it has been as great investment. Attach a Blue Ray player to this TV and it still is better than 95% of the new 1080p LCDs or Plasmas. I just bought a Playstation 3 to play Blue Ray movies and I could not believe the quality of the picture on my screen. Lately I've been looking at the screens in Best Buy and Circuit City thinking that my TV is becoming old and the picture isn't as clear as the new 1080p LCDs.

Repair guy said this should not have happened and Sony says, out of warrenty. We purchased our TV 3 1/2 years ago. Good luck to the rest of you. Trying to decide whether to fix or just get a new TV with a new warrenty. Now needs an optical block for 1500.00. Thought we were buying quality with this expensive of a TV.
